Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Fernley public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Fire staffing and regional academy partnership
Sheriff Pope reported big response-time improvements and full patrol staffing, but fire officials revealed Fernley often has no ambulance available for hours a day, relying on mutual aid from neighboring communities.
School zone safety as school year starts
Kimley Horn presented the finished safety plan: 944 crashes in five years, impairment and speeding as top behaviors, and recommendations from cheap fixes (signage, striping) up to a school zone and crossings. It sets the stage for grant funding.
Fire hydrant inspection gaps
Resident Tammy Dittman flagged that fire hydrant inspections stopped after March, with no reports for April through June, despite a policy calling for quarterly inspections. Repairs from 2024-25 reports are done, but the city is reworking its inspection system and the council asked the city attorney to review the MOU with North Lyon Fire.
Proposed Title 16 nuisance code
A 32-year resident warned that moving code violations from civil fines to criminal offenses could turn longtime residents on dirt roads into criminals — and he asked the council to vote no.
Expulsion of Councilman Stan Lau
An independent investigation found Lau's public outbursts created a hostile work environment for another council member. The council permanently removed him, but the lone no vote argues voters should decide through recall instead.
Resolution 26-002 — exclusion of Councilman Stan Lau
The council was set to vote on permanently excluding Councilman Lau from future meetings, but the item was pushed to March 4. Lau argues the council can't remove a colleague by resolution and that he never got proper notice.
Possible fire station closure
A resident raised the alarm about a possible Fernley fire station closure, noting firefighters work 96-hour shifts and can't staff two stations, and promised to keep pressing the council on it.
